Ingredients // Never Ever List

Everything we make is designed with one goal in mind: to improve your life through hemp. That’s why we’re dedicated to making the highest quality hemp products possible. To achieve that high standard, our mindfully-sourced hemp is cultivated on our own California farms and from our partner farms that care about quality hemp as much as we do. While we can guarantee that the hemp we grow is completely clean, our products contain more than just hemp. To make sure that everything we make is safe and natural, we vet every ingredient that we use to double-check that they’re just as clean as our hemp. We believe that it matters what goes into and onto your body, so we’ve rigorously tested all of our products to know with certainty that they’re made without unnecessary harsh ingredients and chemicals.

The “Why” Behind the “Never Ever”

Sometimes a list just isn’t enough. We put so much thought into how we formulate our products and we think it’s important for you to know why we’re not using certain ingredients.

Parabens

A lot of products claim to be free of parabens these days and that’s because parabens are pretty gross. They’re synthetic preservatives that come in all sorts of chemical combinations (methyl, ethyl, propyl, etc.) and they’ve been used to increase the shelf life of cosmetics and body care products. The FDA and CDC haven’t found any substantial negative effects relating to parabens, but a study in 2004 found parabens in breast cancer tumors. This doesn’t necessarily mean that parabens are linked to breast cancer, but we’re not willing to take that chance.

Sulfates

When you use a shampoo or toothpaste that creates a great lather, that’s usually the result of sulfates. Some of the most common ones are sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium lauryl ether sulfate. They’re known as “surfactants,” which is a fancy name for detergent. There’s a lot of conflicting information out there about sulfates causing harm or being totally safe, but we’ve decided to err on the side of caution and keep sulfates out of our products.

Mineral Oil

According to the National Institutes of Health, “there is consistent evidence that untreated or mildly-treated mineral oils cause cancer of the skin.” While this is mainly related to industrial occupations that come in contact with mineral oils in the course of their work, it offers enough of a warning to us that mineral oils aren’t safe enough for our formulas.

Phthalates

These synthetic chemicals are used to make plastics more flexible. They can be found in everything from shower curtains to plastic pipes. They’re also used in personal care products, even though they’ve been linked to cancer and reproductive issues. We don’t ever want to expose you to harmful chemicals, so we don’t use phthalates in anything we make.

Alcohol Free

Denatured alcohol has been used as a type of solvent to thin out cosmetics for decades, but it’s also really good at drying out your skin. We want you to feel hydrated and refreshed when you use our products, so we’re not going to use any alcohol that could double as a paint thinner.

Formaldehyde-Releasing Agents

Formaldehyde is a gas that’s used in a variety of industries and it’s been linked to cancer and skin irritation by the World Health Organization. It also helps prevent microbes from growing in water-based products, so some cosmetic companies use it in nail polish, body wash, and hair gels. We don’t use any formaldehyde-releasing agents in our products and you can double-check that by reading our labels. They don’t include formaldehyde, quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, polyoxymethylene urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (bromopol) or glyoxal. And they never will.

Coal Tar

Would you put coal tar on your body? We wouldn’t either. Hard pass from us.

Hydroquinone

If you’re into skin bleaching, you may be familiar with hydroquinone. You may also know it if you’re a photographer, because it’s a chemical that’s used to develop photos. While the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology doesn’t see any harm beyond mild skin-related side effects, we’re not so keen on putting photo-developing chemicals onto our skin.

Triclosan and Triclocarban

Both triclosan and triclocarban are supposed to be anti-bacterial, but the FDA hasn’t determined that they’re safe or effective. In fact, they feel so strongly about not using triclosan and triclocarban that they’ve decided that companies can’t use these chemicals in their products. We proudly say no to triclosan and triclocarban.

Synthetic Fragrances

Everybody wants to smell nice, but at what cost? Synthetic fragrances are made with all kinds of unnecessary chemicals and we have a big problem with unnecessary chemicals. In our efforts to be as natural as possible, we’re able to provide products that smell great and contain less than 1% of synthetic fragrances.

Artificial Flavors and Colorants

We’re called Natural Hemp Company for a reason. We don’t use artificial flavors or colorants because we don’t want to and we don’t have to. We’ll always stick with natural ingredients and we hope you will, too.
